The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has given the West African Examination Council (WAEC) a one-week ultimatum to release withheld WASSCE results. This move is aimed at enabling students to meet university admission deadlines.
NUGS President, Daniel Korley Botchwey, warned that failure to release the results would prompt a nationwide protest by Ghanaian students.
He criticized WAEC’s historical disregard for constitutional principles, leading to severe injustices for thousands of students.
Botchwey called on the government to ensure WAEC implements reforms to address these injustices. He demanded the removal of the head of WAEC’s Ghana office if reforms are not initiated, emphasizing that WAEC is accountable to the Ghanaian people and must end its discretionary abuse.
This development comes after WAEC withheld results of over 215,000 candidates due to suspected malpractices during the 2024 WASSCE . WAEC has since begun scrutinizing and releasing withheld results, with plans to fast-track the process.
Noah Osei Asenso, Chair of the Legal and Student Rights Committee, vowed to take legal action to ensure WAEC upholds justice, transparency, and accountability. He emphasized that education is a fundamental human right, and WAEC must protect this right for all Ghanaian students.
Asenso’s stance is rooted in the belief that WAEC’s credibility is on the line. If students and the public lose trust in WAEC’s fairness, the consequences could be severe. Asenso’s committee plans to seek court interpretation to guarantee that WAEC acts in the best interests of Ghanaian students.
