A research report by the Ghana Academic Professional Forum (GAP-F) has criticised the current leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as weak, citing their poor performance five months into opposition.
According to the report, the NPP National Executives have failed to effectively dictate news items in the media space, a key role expected of an opposition party.
Presenting the report at Ghana International Press Centre, Professor Isaac Boadi, Convenor of Ghana Academic Professional Forum (GAP-F), noted that without a credible opposition, the ruling party can become complacent.
He emphasised that a strong opposition should set the agenda for the government, keeping them accountable. However, the NPP has failed to do so, allowing the government to dictate the tone of debates instead.
Dr. Frank Bannor, a lecturer at GIMPA and GAP-F executive member, highlighted significant weaknesses in the NPP’s communication strategy. He noted that the party’s national executives appear weak, marked by conflicting messaging and a lack of narrative control.
Dr. Bannor emphasised that an effective opposition should drive the news narrative, forcing the government to react. Instead, the NPP reacts to the government’s agenda, indicating a significant weakness in communication.
He recommended that the NPP undertake a membership registration drive to gauge its core membership and engage with them during critical times. However, the party lacks clear plans for this initiative.
