The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is currently preparing to elect its presidential candidate for the upcoming 2024 general elections. Ten individuals have been given the green light by the party to compete for this position.
To determine the final candidates, the party has scheduled a super delegate congress to take place on August 25, 2023, across all sixteen regions. From the initial pool of ten aspirants, only five will be selected to run in the presidential election.
In the meantime, the submission of proxy applications for the upcoming presidential Electoral College elections is set for Saturday, August 5, 2023.
However, there is some controversy surrounding the process. One of the aspirants, Kennedy Agyapong, and his supporters are accusing Vice President Bawumia’s camp of engaging in vote-buying.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Wednesday, Ohemeng Ian Moore who is a member of Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team alleged that, the Vice President’s camp is offering GHc50,000 to the chairmen in exchange for their votes.
According to him, the extension of the submission deadline is part of a larger scheme to favour a specific candidate.
“We’ve had information that the Ashanti Regional chairman and some MPs are calling some proxy voters for them to allow members from the Bawumia’s camp to vote, and the money involved is GHc50,000,” he said.
