The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is expected to stage a nationwide demonstration today, Thursday, August 6, under the theme “Democracy Under Attack,” citing what it says are growing threats to Ghana’s democratic governance.

According to the party, the protest will begin at 6:00 a.m. at the Supreme Court and end at the Jubilee House.

Supporters have been urged to participate using the hashtags #DemocracyUnderAttack, #SaveGhanaNow, and #SayNoToStateCapture.

The NPP says the demonstration is intended to highlight concerns over what it describes as restrictions on freedom of expression, the treatment of opposition voices and perceived attempts to weaken Ghana’s democratic institutions.

In a Facebook post, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and a member of the NPP’s communications team, said the protest is a stand against what he believes are efforts to silence dissent and erode democratic principles.

“There is always the temptation by people in power to suppress the voices and rights of the people. But democracy has a way of correcting itself. Try as you may, you can never suppress the will of the people,” he wrote.

Mr Aboagye also raised concerns over what he described as the increasing arrest of opposition figures, the detention of individuals over alleged insults, the arrest of TikTok users and journalists, the imposition of strict bail conditions, and what he sees as a troubling relationship between the Executive and the Judiciary.

He called for the law to be applied fairly to everyone and cautioned against what he termed selective justice.

“Let’s stop selective justice now before it becomes a cycle. Power is like ice… Live and let live—that’s the beauty of democracy,” he added.

The NPP insists the protest is aimed at defending civil liberties, upholding the rule of law and protecting democratic accountability.

The government has, however, rejected allegations that it is targeting political opponents, maintaining that state institutions operate independently and that all law enforcement actions are carried out in accordance with due process.
