Rev. Boffah Opoku Mensah, a lecturer at the Christian Service University, has vehemently criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its approach to selecting presidential candidates.

As the 2024 general elections approach, the NPP is preparing to choose their presidential candidate. However, there are concerns about the fairness of this process.

The party has given clearance to ten candidates, including the vice president, Dr. Bawumia, to compete for the flagbearer position.

However, nine of these contestants believe that the party executives will not treat them fairly.

In the midst of these concerns, one of the frontrunners, Kennedy Agyapong, has issued a warning that he will abandon the NPP if the party does not ensure a fair and transparent election.

Commenting on the happenings in the NPP on a panel discussion on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, the University lecturer asserted that the NPP has problems selecting a successor whenever they are in power.

“The truth is that the NPP as a political party has a big problem dealing with second terms and getting a successor whenever they are in power, and they have not been able to deal with that problem. Since 1992, in NPP, the selection of a successor has been a problem.”

“There is too much intellectualism in the NPP, as we always say; sometimes they should use common sense. I’m saying it on authority. You said several polls have projected that a lot of the contestants will get 0%. When you look at the ten people, Some of them you ask yourself: did such a person examine himself and said, I want to lead Ghana? What comes to his mind?.” Rev. Opoku Mensah quizzed.

He cited the situation in 2008 when the ex-president was exiting office.

“We had a situation in the NPP’s second term in 2008 when President Kufour was exiting office when Asiedu Nketia described their candidate as ‘17 thieves going to select their leader’.  It’s time for the NPP to set up to solve that problem because it has the potential to disintegrate the party in the future. That issue affected the fortunes of Akufo-Addo in 2008.” The lecturer told Kwesi Parker-Wilson, host of the show.
