The Member of Parliament for Atwima Kwanwoma, Kofi Amankwa-Manu has criticized certain contestants in the New Patriotic Party presidential race for their negative remarks about the Akufo-Addo government’s decision to seek an IMF bailout.
In a statement released by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, on Friday, July 1, 2022, President Akufo-Addo directed the Minister of Finance to initiate official discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Kennedy Agyapong, the Assin North Legislator, and Kwabena Agyapong, the former general secretary, who are both vying for the party’s leadership position, have urged party delegates not to vote for their opponents, who are part of the Akufo-Addo-led government that sought assistance from the IMF.
In response to the comments made by the presidential aspirants regarding the IMF bailout, the deputy defense minister expressed his disappointment in an interview with Kwesi Parker-Wilson on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, stating that they have betrayed the Akufo-Addo government.
“This election, like every other, will reveal the true contenders. If I were to compare each of them with Dr. Bawumia, the difference would be evident. Kwabena Agyapong, who was once the general secretary of the party, holds a significant position and commands respect within the party.
“Therefore, it would be surprising if he couldn’t address any concerns. I am aware of Kwabena’s special relationship with the president, so it would be unexpected if he couldn’t communicate with him.”
He added that, “We held a parliamentary vote on the e-levy, a crucial component of the IMF deal. Kennedy Agyapong, an MP, actively participated in this vote. Therefore, it is contradictory for individuals to support something through their vote and then later condemn and distance themselves from it. In light of this, they lack the moral authority to criticize the e-levy.”
“In my opinion, those vying for the presidential position have betrayed the Akufo-Addo government. It is noteworthy that all candidates in the race are loyal members of the NPP. In a family setting, when things go awry, one can seek guidance from the elders. Similarly, if one is unable to do so, their membership within the family becomes inadequate.” The Depurty Defense Minister stated.
