A group of second-hand clothing traders at Adum Railways in Kumasi have openly declared their support for former Education Minister, Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum, as the ideal candidate to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections.
The traders’ endorsement comes days after Dr. Adutwum officially announced his intention to contest for the NPP flagbearer position.
His declaration has sparked growing interest among grassroots supporters, particularly in the Ashanti Region, the party’s traditional stronghold.
At a press briefing organised by the traders, the group described Dr. Adutwum as a humble, intelligent, and results-driven leader with a proven track record in public service, particularly in the education sector.
“Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum is someone with great humility. His knowledge is unparalleled. When he entered the education system, he made significant improvements. He brought STEM education and TVET, which tells you he has a high level of knowledge.”
“With this knowledge, I think he can lead the NPP and the country at large. I’m therefore pleading with NPP delegates to vote for Dr. Adutwum to become the party’s flagbearer,” said Elder James Osei Kufuor, a respected voice among the traders.
Another trader, Obaatan Baakope, expressed disappointment in the party’s previous electoral strategy, suggesting that the NPP needs fresh leadership if it hopes to return to power in 2028.
“We have realised that only Dr. Osei Adutwum is the right candidate to lead the NPP. Going into the 2024 elections, we marketed Dr. Bawumia massively, yet the NPP lost big time. So this time around, there’s no need to let him lead in 2028,” he stated. “We want Dr. Adutwum to become our flagbearer because he’s the only one who can help the party win power.”
The traders believe that Dr. Adutwum’s transformative leadership in the education sector, particularly his promotion of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), demonstrates the kind of innovation and practical thinking needed at the national level.
With the NPP’s flagbearer race expected to heat up ahead of the party’s internal elections in 2026, Dr. Adutwum’s support among sections of the business community in Kumasi signals growing grassroots momentum for his campaign.
