Former Western North Regional Minister, Joojo Rocky Obeng, has issued a strong warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership, cautioning against any plans to present former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate for a potential second term.
In an exclusive interview with Oyerepa TV, Obeng expressed deep concerns about what he described as the dangers of imposing Bawumia on the party without allowing for fair competition.
He believes such a move could spell disaster for the NPP’s internal unity and long-term survival.
“Let’s not impose Bawumia on anyone. If we do that, we’re not being fair to others. A time will come when a candidate will not work hard for the party because he might think he has a guaranteed second term,” he cautioned.
According to Obeng, institutionalising a policy within the party that allows presidential candidates to automatically contest a second term could demotivate candidates and undermine the party’s core values of fairness and hard work.
“As a party, if we decide to make a policy to allow presidential candidates to run for two consecutive times, it will collapse the party,” he warned.
On the subject of the NPP’s future and the 2028 general elections, Obeng made a bold prediction. He believes that Kennedy Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, is the party’s best hope for recapturing power.
“Kennedy Agyapong will give us the best shock in 2028,” he declared confidently.
Obeng praised Kennedy Agyapong’s charisma, grassroots appeal, and reputation for speaking truth to power, stating that the outspoken politician is the only one capable of reconnecting the NPP with the ordinary Ghanaian voter.
“Kennedy is the only man to lead the NPP to victory in the 2028 elections. He understands the people and has the energy and honesty the country needs right now,” he added.
His remarks come amid growing internal debates within the NPP regarding leadership direction, party unity, and succession planning following the 2024 general elections.
