The Majority in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Menah-Bonsu, is calling on the Council of Elders of the ruling New Patriotic Party, NPP to talk to Alan Kyerematen.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 25, 2023, Alan Kyerematen announced his decision to resign from the NPP and also contest as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential elections.
Alan said, “The NPP as it exists now has very little resemblance to the party that I joined in 1992 and helped to nurture. The party has been hijacked by a select group of party leaders and elders, government appointees, behind-the-curtain power brokers, and some unscrupulous party apparatchiks.
I wish to use this platform to announce that I am honourably resigning from the New Patriotic Party to contest for the high office of the President of the Republic of Ghana in the 2024 general elections as an independent presidential candidate,” he said.
Reacting to Alan’s resignation in an interview with Akua Asiedua on Oyerepa breakfast time on Wednesday, the Suame MP called on the elders of the party to engage him (Alan) for a possible comeback.
“The status of Alan in the NPP, at least you can get 100 people from each constituency who will say they will not vote because of Alan. So 100 multiplied by 275 constituencies will give you 27,000, which will go against the NPP, so it is not good.
“It’s good that we are voting next year. By the time we get to the election, all those who intended to vote for him will party away with him.”
The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs believes former NPP member Alan Kyerematen can change his mind.
“I believe there is still time, like what happened previously, for him to change his mind. I will still urge our elders to talk to him. In fact, when he pulled out, I told the national chairman to go and engage Alan; he did, but the chairman informed me that he couldn’t meet Alan in any attempt.” the majority leader stated.
