Editor of the Informer Newspaper, Andy Kankam, has made his position clear on the change of leadership in the parliament of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stating that they did not apply wisdom.
His comments came after the Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, resigned from his position in the House.
During a meeting held on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at the Jubilee House, the seat of Ghana’s presidency, the NPP leadership informed the Majority Caucus of its desire to have a new person as the leader of its front in Parliament.
Speaking with Nana Yaw Mensah Joel on the Oyerepa Breakfast show Thursday morning, Mr. Kankam explained that issues like this should be handled with wisdom to prevent negative consequences for the party as they approach the 2024 elections.
“It is not conducive to the party’s development as they head into the upcoming elections. There is a significant task ahead, and actions should not be taken haphazardly, leading to party division and real consequences,” he said.
He added that the party’s leadership should have allowed Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to complete his term and focus on the challenges ahead, rather than introducing a divisive element that could harm their prospects.
Mr. Kankam argued that the NPP did not exercise wisdom in addressing this critical issue, potentially causing division within the party and impacting their electoral success.
“They did not handle this critical situation with wisdom. They should have learned from the experiences of the NDC and acted more sensibly,” he suggested.
He continued by saying that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) embarked on this same process and has left them in a certain position which has still not been resolved, affecting them in their parliamentary business.
Meanwhile, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua, has been directed to formally announce the changes within the next 24 hours.
