The Member of Parliament for Ejisu, Kwabena Boateng, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) cannot compel the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to withdraw from the upcoming Akwatia Constituency by-election.
His comment follows calls by NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye urging the NDC to step aside in Akwatia, just as the NPP has chosen not to contest the Tamale Central by-election.
The Tamale Central seat became vacant after the death of its MP, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who also served as Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation. Dr Murtala was among eight people killed in the Ghana Air Force helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. Under Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, his passing triggered the need for a by-election.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time with Akua Asieduaa, Mr Boateng said while the NPP’s withdrawal from Tamale Central was a voluntary decision, the party has no authority to dictate whether the NDC participates in Akwatia.
“The NPP cannot force the NDC to withdraw from the Akwatia by-election. It’s their decision to make,” he stressed.
The Akwatia parliamentary by-election is scheduled for September 2, 2025.
