There has been conversation in Ghana’s music space about the role of dance challenges in promoting songs.
Many people argue that while these challenges can make a song trend, they often don’t give the music lasting value. Once the challenge fades and a new one takes over, the song itself also tends to lose attention.
Music duo DopeNation, who are known for songs that created viral dance trends like Zormizor and Shey, shared their perspective on the issue during an appearance on TV3’s Showbiz 360.
They admitted that a good number of their hits have been tied to dance challenges, but noted that not every song needs one.
“Well, we represent the pop culture on this side of the world when it comes to dance music. So, we have a responsibility to make sure we have dance challenges. Mind you, every song doesn’t need a dance challenge,” DopeNation stated.
Our music does not fit into traditional categories
They explained that because dance is such a central part of Ghanaian culture, from weddings to funerals, incorporating it into music feels natural. According to them, it’s less about chasing trends and more about looking back on culture.
“We also feel we are in an era where…Ghana, we celebrate a lot of our culture with dance, whether funeral or wedding, so why not put it in our music and does the only way you can express music, music is being express by dance,” they added.
Veteran rapper Tinny, who recently spoke on Okay FM, said he personally would not depend on dance challenges to push his songs. In his view, music tied to such trends does not stand the test of time.
