The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has strongly opposed calls from sections of the public advocating for prayers for President John Dramani Mahama and his administration’s success.
Expressing his concerns, he pointed out that similar calls were not made during former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s tenure, highlighting what he perceives as hypocrisy among certain citizens.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Mustapha argued that the success of any administration should be measured by its ability to fulfill promises made to the people, rather than relying on ‘metaphysical’ interventions.
“I have heard this narrative that the people of Ghana are losing faith in democracy and politics and that we should pray for President John Mahama to succeed to save the political class and our democracy. Such arrant nonsense. Akufo-Addo de3, he was a butcher right and didn’t deserve the prayers of all? No one will pray for John Mahama to succeed, his success is not premised on metaphysics but deliverables,” he stated.
He further emphasized that the government does not require prayers, citing decisions and actions that, in his opinion, have negatively impacted ordinary citizens.
“A president who starts his tenure with mass firing of young people, releases his party cronies standing trials for various offences, and terribly fails on his major promises to the people needs prayers? No. A government that is already showing signs of intolerance and threatening free speech?” he remarked.
Salam Mustapha urged the public not to offer prayers for the government but instead to hold it accountable for its actions and decisions.
