Former Minister of Roads and Highways and current member of Parliament’s Roads and Highways Committee, Francis Asenso Boakye, has criticised the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over what he describes as a lack of genuine commitment to railway development.

Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Asenso Boakye said the NDC, despite promising massive railway expansion during their time in office and in previous policy statements, failed to allocate any significant funding for the sector in their newly presented 2026 Budget.

“When the NDC came to power, they pledged to build a lot of railways, but in their latest 2026 budget, I didn’t see anything for railways,” he stated.

He, however, acknowledged that the party’s decision to prioritise road infrastructure was positive, noting that investing in roads remained essential for national development. But he claimed the intention behind the allocation was politically motivated rather than a genuine attempt to address the country’s long-standing road deficits.

“The only thing they want to do is to pump money into road construction, which is very good. But the idea behind it is not to solve the road challenges; they want to make a name,” he said.

Asenso Boakye argued that the NDC’s approach was characterised by what he termed “poor planning, poor strategy, and ill intentions,” stressing that such governance practices deny the country value for money on major infrastructure projects.

According to him, without a clear long-term strategy, especially in balancing road and railway development, Ghana risks repeating cycles of ineffective spending and stalled national growth.
