The retired Commissioner of Police (COP), Nathan Kofi Boakye, is emerging as a strong contender for the Vice Presidential slot of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
This name has gained significant consideration among stakeholders and advisors of the former President.
Kofi Boakye, a lawyer by training, hails from the Ashanti Region, which is where the NDC is reportedly searching for a running mate in case Mahama decides to replace Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.
Many party members have suggested that the retired police officer could better serve Mahama’s needs compared to the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.
Nathan Kofi Boakye’s alleged affiliation with the National Democratic Congress has been known for many years, with reports suggesting that Mahama would have appointed him as Inspector General of Police if the NDC were in power before his retirement.
During his tenure as the Director of Legal and Prosecution of the Ghana Police Service, COP Retired Kofi Boakye was seen at the wedding of Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the opposition NDC, in the company of John Mahama and other NDC leaders.
Despite this, the retired police officer left the service on a high note, earning a strong reputation for professionalism and courage. He received numerous awards for his dedicated service to the police force and Ghana.
Many believe that the selection of Nathan Kofi Boakye could greatly benefit Mahama’s chances of winning the Presidency.
Furthermore, others argue that having “one of their own” as Vice President would ensure a more professional and resolute response against the NPP’s alleged election rigging plan in 2024.
Supporters of Kofi Boakye also highlight his qualifications for the position, as he would be responsible for overseeing the Police and other security councils of the Republic.
Nathan Kofi Boakye joins a list of potential partners for John Mahama in 2024, including Alex Kofi Mensah Mould, Kwame Awuah Darko, Julius Debrah, Sylvester Mensah, and Dr. Valerie Sawyerr, among others.
