The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed that all government appointees intending to contest for party executive positions must step down from their public roles at least six months before the party’s internal elections.

This requirement applies to candidates seeking offices at the constituency, regional, or national levels and is designed to ensure fairness and discipline in the party’s internal electoral processes.

At a press briefing on Thursday, January 29, 2026, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey explained that the directive is aimed at eliminating any undue advantage and creating a level playing field for all aspirants.

“Candidates seeking positions at the constituency level must resign by April 2026, those aiming for regional positions by May 2026, and aspirants for national offices by June 2026,” Mr. Kwetey said.

He emphasized that the policy would be strictly enforced without exceptions. “This is about curbing excessive ambition. If you intend to serve the party, you must leave your government post. You cannot straddle both positions,” he added.

The General Secretary noted that the directive is part of a wider internal restructuring to enhance integrity, fairness, and shared responsibility within the party.

“I call on all party officials, from the branch to the national level, to conduct themselves diligently, act transparently, and uphold the principles of the National Democratic Congress,” Mr. Kwetey said.

The directive affects ministers and deputy ministers, chief executive officers and managing directors (including deputies), officers in equivalent positions, and metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executives. Board chairpersons and members are not included.

Mr. Kwetey also announced that the NDC’s National Delegates Conference is scheduled for December 19, 2026, to elect new national officers. Nominations will be open from Saturday, November 7, to Monday, November 9, with the vetting of aspirants to take place on Thursday, November 12, and Friday, November 13.

Party leaders stated that these measures are critical for maintaining party unity and credibility as the NDC prepares for future elections.
