The Atwima Mponua Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Haruna Salifu, popularly known as Chairman Kutu, has debunked a viral video accusing him of engaging in illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as galamsey.
In response to the video, which he describes as false and defamatory, Chairman Kutu has filed a lawsuit against Amaro Shakur, a popular youtuber the individual alleged to have published the content.
The suit demands GH¢1,500,000.00 in damages for defamation.
According to the writ, the plaintiff contends that the statements made by the defendant are not only untrue but have also significantly tarnished his reputation. Chairman Kutu is seeking multiple legal remedies, including:
-
A declaration that the defendant’s publication is defamatory
-
A retraction of the publication on all of the defendant’s social media platforms
-
A public apology from the defendant
-
An injunction to prevent further publication of false statements against the plaintiff
Chairman Kutu, in a public statement, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining. He called on the public to ignore the baseless allegations and treat the viral video with the contempt it deserves.
“I remain fully supportive of initiatives aimed at protecting our environment and curbing illegal mining. These allegations are completely false and intended to damage my reputation,” he said.
The case is expected to proceed in court as the plaintiff seeks to clear his name and hold the publisher accountable for what he describes as deliberate misinformation.
