Razak Kojo Poku, a member of the New Patriotic Party and founder of the Concern Voters Movement CVM has chastised the Minister of youth and sports, Mustapha Ussif over the introduction of the National Fitness Walk in the country.
The Ministry for Youth and Sports launched National Fitness Day, which will be observed every month to promote exercise and fitness among Ghanaians.
Speaking at the launch in Accra, Mr Mustapha Ussif, Minister for Youth and Sports, said the National Fitness Day seeks to promote good community relationships among residents of various communities and to create awareness about fitness and health issues.
According to Razak, the National Fitness walk is a misplaced priority, and he described it as useless.
“Looking at the situation we find ourselves in, National Fitness Walk is not what Ghanaians need. Akufo-Addo’s government is looking for pragmatic measures to bring things down.
“Let me ask you, when you are hungry can you exercise? What would be the essence of exercise when you can’t pay water bills and electricity bills? Have we considered how the depreciation of the cedi is affecting our businesses ? Even for those who benefited from Nabco, the government is struggling to pay them.” He said.
“About one thousand doctors are jobless. There are issues that are bordering the youth and as a youth and sports minister, is it only health walk you can come up with? Is that what the youth need? Is that what Ghanaians need in this prevailing economic condition? He asked.
He stated again, “this is a copied initiative that the minister has brought to Ghana. It was a private initiative. It started in the US in 2001, they were all private initiatives. In the US, it is celebrated every year but sees, we that are adopting, we want it every month”
“The minister said the money involved in its activities is private funding, even if it is private funding it doesn’t make sense to go and print t-shirts and other accessories for this useless health walk. ”
Razak further said, as minister of youth and sports, your responsibility is the look for policies that would impact on lives of Ghanaian youth, that is your job,” Angry Razak stated.
