Former Member of Parliament for the Manhyia North constituency in the Ashanti Region, Collins Owusu Amankwaah, has criticized President Akufo-Addo regarding the rightful person to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2024.
Amankwaah believes that President Akufo-Addo should have made it clear to Vice President Dr Bawumia that Alan Kyerematen is next in line to lead the NPP after his tenure of office.
During an interview on Oyerepa Breakfast Show, Amankwaah emphasized that President Akufo-Addo had made a promise before the 2008 general elections. He pledged that if the party allowed him to become President, he would ensure that his toughest opponent, Alan Kyerematen, would take over after his term.
However, President Akufo-Addo has failed to honour that promise because if he had made it known to Vice President Bawumia he wouldn’t have dared to contest in the party’s flagbearership contest.
Amankwaah argues that the tension between Alan’s camp and Dr Bawumia is a result of President Akufo-Addo’s failure to do what is right. He believes that President Akufo-Addo’s actions have caused this division within the party.
“Nana Addo should’ve informed Bawumia that, he made a promise or covenant with Alan and that he’s next to lead the NPP not him (Bawumia).
Because in 2007 at KNUST Great Hall, in the presence of all NPP rank and files, Nana Addo promised that, Alan will be next to lead the party after his (Nana Addo) tenure of office. But look at the kind of opposition and machination that is geared towards Alan. They’re insulting and disgracing him all over.” The former Manhyia North lawmaker stated.
