The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality has commemorated the 2025 World Disaster Risk Reduction Day with a meaningful tree-planting exercise at the Sefwi Anhwiaso Cluster of Schools.
The event, aimed at promoting environmental stewardship and disaster prevention education among schoolchildren, brought together students, teachers, and community leaders.
Leading the campaign, the Municipal NADMO Coordinator, Madam Abubakar Amina, underscored the importance of environmental conservation in mitigating the impacts of disasters such as floods, droughts, and climate change. She urged students to take their studies seriously, stressing that education, knowledge, and discipline are essential in building resilient communities.
“A well-informed and disciplined generation is key to reducing disaster risks in our communities. Planting a tree today is a step toward safeguarding our future,”
Madam Amina stated.
The Deputy NADMO Officer, Mr. Prosper Acquah, also encouraged both teachers and students to nurture the planted trees, noting that their survival would symbolize the community’s commitment to environmental protection. He explained that tree planting remains one of the most effective ways to combat the harmful effects of environmental degradation.
“These trees are not just plants; they are life-saving shields against climate-related disasters,”
Mr. Acquah added.
Representing the community, the Assembly Member for the Sefwi Anhwiaso Electoral Area, Mr. Sampson Gyapong, commended NADMO for extending disaster education to schools. He urged students to become ambassadors of environmental protection and to share the knowledge gained with their peers and families.
The participating schools included Riley-Opoku Anglican JHS, Anhwiaso Methodist Primary & JHS, and Anhwiaso M/A Primary & JHS.
Students enthusiastically shared the lessons they learned during the program, while both teachers and pupils actively took part in planting seedlings across the school compound — demonstrating their commitment to building a greener and safer environment.
This initiative forms part of NADMO’s broader mission to raise awareness on disaster risk reduction, promote environmental sustainability, and empower the younger generation with the knowledge and values needed to create disaster-resilient communities.
