Kwame Owusu, the former director-general of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), has recently shed light on his decision to decline the appointment offered by President Akufo-Addo.
Back on June 18, 2001, President Akufo-Addo extended an appointment to Mr. Kwame Owusu as the Board Chairman of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). However, despite the initial offer, Mr. Owusu ultimately did not assume the position of board chairman at the GRA.
During an interview on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Mr. Owusu disclosed that his party, the NPP, opposed his appointment, which led to his decision to withdraw his acceptance.
“I was appointed to the GRA because there were huge losses at the GRA, and President Akufo-Addo knew I was the best person to redeem the losses because of my background in taxation in the US. The president told me to resign from Ghana Maritime Authority the GRA, so I did, and he (the President) made the appointment and I was approved. Notwithstanding, some people, our own party members did want me to go to GRA. They knew I would be an obstacle for them.”He said.
Mr Owusu added; “When people know your capacity to work, they will frustrate the system. They knew what I was doing at the Ghana Maritime Authority. The vessel I was arresting them with prompted them that I would not give them that chance at GRA, so they were very afraid of their own shadow.” Mr Owusu asserted.
He explained that after five months of fraud by his party members, he resigned.
“When I taught for four to five months, there was no boss at GRA. I wrote to the president that Ghana is bigger than one person, so he should make another appointment because the Ofori-Attas were delaying the process, so I resigned in order to pave the way for another person because there can’t be an appointment if I don’t resign.”
