Mr. Nii Adottey Mingle, the General Manager of Sales for MTN Ghana in the Northern Sector, has announced that the Telecommunication Network is targeting the donation of approximately 7,000 blood units this year, 2024 to fill the blood banks of various hospitals in their catchment area.
This announcement was made during a donation exercise organized for students at Prempeh College in Kumasi.
Mr. Mingle emphasized that MTN, through its corporate social responsibility initiatives, is committed to enhancing healthcare delivery in Ghana.
He acknowledged the challenges faced in obtaining blood to adequately stock the banks across the country. As a result, MTN has taken it upon itself to address this issue by organizing a blood donation exercise this Valentine’s Day. The aim is to encourage individuals to voluntarily donate blood and help bridge the gap in the blood banks.
“Valentine’s Day is about love, it’s about giving, so it was necessary to donate blood to save lives.
The target is to donate 6000 units this year, but we’ll stretch ourselves if we can do 7000. Over the years we’ve done about 26000 units.” Nii Adottey stated in an interview.
He urged Ghanaians to donate blood to fill the blood bank.
“…This we think is a good cause; we call on all Ghanaians to help ensure the blood bank always has blood so that we can save lives.”
Dr. Alexia Osei, Head of Transfusion Medicine Unit at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), emphasized the pressing need for substantial resources in her department and other healthcare facilities.
She said all stakeholders must contribute generously to save precious lives.
“Komfo Anokye uses about 80 units of blood every day, other hospitals are not included. For this reason, we need to fill the blood bank to save lives.”
