The Ministry of Communications and Digitalization, led by Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has reaffirmed its dedication to achieving seamless mobile money transactions and roaming across Africa.
This forward-thinking initiative aims to create a unified financial ecosystem, facilitating effortless cross-border transactions and driving economic growth for small and medium-sized enterprises.
In collaboration with telecom networks and electronic money issuers, the ministry has established frameworks for common standards and protocols, ensuring seamless transactions across service providers. Regional partnerships have also been formed to harmonize regulatory policies and support interoperability.
Speaking at the APN Interoperability Symposium in Accra, the minister highlighted the successful implementation of bilateral roaming between Ghana and Cote-d’Ivoire, with ongoing negotiations with Nigeria and other countries. This milestone marks a significant step forward in achieving interoperability among participating nations, following stalled regional roaming initiatives since 2016.
The successful implementation in Togo and Benin has sparked interest from other countries, including Nigeria, to join the initiative. This development is poised to significantly enhance Africa’s economic competitiveness, harnessing technological innovations to foster a knowledge-based environment.
The ministry’s efforts aim to create a seamless and inclusive financial ecosystem, promoting economic growth and digital inclusion across the continent.”
