Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson has accused the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) of mishandling the treatment of his late mother, alleging that the facility repeatedly failed to correctly identify her condition before her death.

The comedian, who recently lost his mother while she was receiving care at the hospital, made the allegations in a series of posts on X, claiming that the medical centre, which is regarded as one of Ghana’s leading healthcare facilities, made several wrong diagnoses and recommended expensive treatments.

Michael Blackson alleged that the situation left him questioning the quality of care provided at the facility and suggested that financial considerations influenced some decisions taken during his mother’s treatment.

“I could go on and on about the University of Ghana Medical Centre and would love to sue them for the few missed diagnoses, but it’s in Ghana, so I’ll be wasting my time because by the time I see a judge, I’m sure I’ll be in my early 90s. This University of Ghana Medical Centre misdiagnosed my mom so many times but also recommended the most expensive treatments to make sure they sucked enough money out of me,” he wrote.

The comedian further criticised the healthcare system, claiming that people without financial means often struggle to receive adequate medical attention.

“I feel so sorry for people in most parts of West Africa with no money that need medical help because they won’t get it. Without money, they will send you home to die. I wish I never paid them a penny; then they would have probably sent my mom home and she’ll probably still be alive. @ugmedicalcentre, like most of our hospitals in Ghana, only cares about money. Their motto is money over life,” he added.

He also alleged that hospital officials provided misleading information about his mother’s condition when he attempted to move her to another medical facility. According to him, a staff member later requested money during the process of identifying his mother’s remains, an incident he described as deeply troubling.

The allegations by Michael Blackson have sparked public discussion about patient care, accountability and the challenges facing Ghana’s healthcare sector. UGMC is yet to publicly respond to the comedian’s claims.

One thing that was even more sad than my mother’s passing at @ugmedicalcentre was looking in this log in book of all dead patients that had that age and time of death. I saw one name and the age was only 19 yrs old. That 19 yr death brought tears to my face. i said to myself…

I realized after two weeks at that hospital we wanted to take my mom out and as soon as we told them that and they knew they were about to miss out on some money they told us she couldn’t breath and she needed tubes installed in her so she can’t be moved.

Our country is beautiful and all parents love to move back home after they retired abroad but my best suggestion is for them to fly out to Europe or America at least once a year for their yearly check medical check up.
