A man identified only as Balenbogma, believed to be in his 50s, has been shot and killed in a deadly armed robbery attack along the Bole-Bamboi highway. His son, who is in his 20s, sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently in critical condition.
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. at Taselema, a community situated on the Techiman-Wa highway. According to reports, the victims were traveling from Sunyani to Lawra to attend the burial of their late mother when they were ambushed by armed robbers.
Eyewitnesses, including commercial drivers who narrowly escaped the attack, told Adom News that the robbers have been taking advantage of the poor road conditions to stage frequent and deadly ambushes. The stretch has become notorious for such attacks, with reports of not only robberies but also cases of sexual assault against female passengers.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Taselema Polyclinic mortuary, while his injured son is receiving medical treatment at the same facility.
Residents and regular commuters on the route are calling on the government to urgently rehabilitate the deteriorating road infrastructure, which they say has contributed to the rising incidents of highway crime.
They are also urging the Ghana Police Service to intensify patrols along the route to enhance security and protect lives.
The tragic incident adds to growing concerns about safety on key transit routes in northern Ghana, especially those plagued by poor road conditions and inadequate security presence.
