The majority faction staged a walkout from Parliament on Wednesday during discussions to approve the 2024 budget.
Following the conclusion of the debate, Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, announced that the policy document would be decided upon through a voice vote.
Subsequently, the Speaker declared that the 2024 budget had been approved by a majority voice vote.
However, the minority MPs contested the ruling and demanded a head count.
In response to the minority’s resistance, the majority MPs, displeased with the situation, decided to exit the Chamber upon a declaration from Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markins.
Some majority MPs were hesitant and engaged in conversations within the Chamber, while others remained seated. This prompted Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to move around and rally them to leave.
The minority MPs responded with chants of ‘away’ and loud protests.
As a result, Speaker Bagbin suspended the session.
Meanwhile, Deputy Finance Minister Abena Osei Adare had earlier urged the House to expedite the budget approval process to ensure timely implementation.
