Former President John Dramani Mahama has voiced his support for organized labor’s demand for the government to reverse the imposition of Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer expressed worry that this move would further burden Ghanaians who are already grappling with economic hardships.
In a Facebook statement, Mahama highlighted that this implementation would increase tariffs by almost 21%, leading to a ripple effect on the prices of goods, services, and transportation fares. He urged the government to reconsider its decision and provide relief to the citizens.
Mahama also criticized the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government, stating that Ghanaians will continue to suffer as long as they remain in power.
He stressed the importance of responsibly utilizing the recently released $600 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and cautioned the government to exercise prudence.
Furthermore, Mahama assured that the NDC is eager and prepared to address Ghana’s economic challenges and offer substantial relief to the people once they assume office in January 2025.
He also mentioned his vision of creating well-paying jobs through his 24-hour economy policy and other initiatives.
On Wednesday, the former President is set to commence a three-day #BuildingGhanaTour in the Ashanti Region, during which he will interact with and listen to the concerns of the region’s residents.
