Maame Efua Houadjeto, the former Deputy Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).
In her new role, she will be responsible for promoting Ghana’s cultural heritage, strengthening the tourism sector, and implementing policies to attract both local and international visitors.
Her appointment aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to boost tourism as a key driver of economic growth.
Houadjeto brings extensive experience from her political and leadership background, with a strong focus on community empowerment and women’s development.
Her tenure is expected to introduce innovative initiatives that will enhance Ghana’s global tourism appeal.
She succeeds Akwasi Agyeman, who stepped down on January 22 after serving as CEO since January 2017. During his tenure, Agyeman successfully navigated the GTA through challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and led a strong recovery.
Under his leadership, international tourist arrivals grew from 355,108 in 2020 to 1,148,002 in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Domestic tourism also saw a significant increase, rising from 456,000 visitors in 2017 to 1.4 million in 2023.
With Houadjeto at the helm, the GTA is poised for a new chapter of growth and innovation in Ghana’s tourism industry.
