Former Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Akwasi Osei Agyei is calling for the decentralisation of Ghana’s system of government.
The move he believes will accelerate the development of the country.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time hosted by Bismark Brown, Thursday, March 18, 2022, the former Foreign Affairs Minister under Ex-President Kuffour’s regime stated that, the only antidote to the country’s retarded development is to implement a decentralisation system to unbound the local assemblies to take effective decisions. This he said will take the edge off the central government’s workload.
Mr Akwasi Agyei explained that the decentralisation system will help local assemblies to build important infrastructures such as schools, markets, sports stadia among others in the various communities.
“There’s a burden on the central government. Therefore, as a developing nation, we need to implement the decentralisation system of government to confer power to local authorities to administer their own affairs. I believe this will help our swift development.
I can’t see why the central government should come and build schools among other infrastructures. It should be the local authorities; they should build schools.” The former Ejisu-Juaben Lawmaker stated.
As per him, the various property rates among other taxes the assemblies are taken should be able to cater for their growth.
