International Women’s Day is an annual event celebrated globally on 8th March to honour the achievements, resilience, and empowerment of women. This year’s theme is “Inspire Inclusion”.This theme echoes as we reflect on the importance of fostering an environment where women feel valued, respected and empowered to participate fully and rock shoulders with men in all aspects of life. It is about recognizing and celebrating the unique strengths and contributions women bring on board to create the enabling environments where they can impart their full potential on generations.
Again, the theme calls upon individuals, organizations, and governments to take proactive steps to dismantle barriers and promote diversity in all areas of life. It challenges us to confront implicit biases, address systemic inequalities, and create a culture of belonging where every woman feels seen, heard, and valued.
Throughout history, women have faced discrimination and inequality in various facets of life. Notwithstanding, women have shown incredible resilience in achieving their goals. From fighting for equal rights and opportunities to challenging societal norms and stereotypes.Women have also played fundamental roles in shaping our world, ensuring equal access to opportunities and resources regardless of their background or circumstances.
There are lots of inspirational stories of women such as Marie Curie, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Dr. Joyce Aryee among others who have broken barriers and paved the way for greater inclusion and equality. From trailblazing leaders and activists to grass roots organizers and everyday heroines, women around the globe continue to inspire us with their courage, resilience, and determination to create a more inclusive and equitable world.
However, achieving true inclusion requires collective action and commitment from all sectors of society. It requires us to listen to the voices of the marginalized and under-represented women, amplify their stories, and work together to dismantle the structural obstacles that hold them back.
On International Women’s Day 2024, let us seize the opportunity to inspire inclusion in all areas of life, from the workplace, the classroom to the halls of government and beyond. Let us celebrate the achievements of women from diverse backgrounds and honour their contributions to our communities, societies, and economies.
Moreover, let us recommit ourselves to advancing gender equality and women’s rights, not just on International Women’s Day, but every day. This means advocating for policies and practices that promote diversity, equity, inclusion and standing up against discrimination and injustice in all its forms as stipulated in the Sustainable Development Goal 5.
Ayekoo to all women!!!
