Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the biggest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), was heard in an unreleased audio recording implicating that the party did not have solid evidence during their election 2020 petition to the Supreme Court.
In the election petition, the NDC accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of tampering with the results and challenged the validity of the voting results.
They requested that the court overrule the Electoral Commission’s proclamation of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the election winner.
In a viral tape recording available to Oyerepa online, purportedly containing the voice of Mr. Asiedu Nketia, affectionately known as ‘General Mosquito,’ and in what appeared to be a closed-door meeting between him and some NDC members, the General Secretary could be heard castigating the party’s Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, of doing poor work on the application filed.
Asiedu Nketiah said Ofosu Ampofo thwarted the NDC’s attempts to collate their pink sheets in order to back up their case.
He recalled how the Chairman collected some University researchers to work on the classification of the election results but delivered a poor report that would have resulted in his (Asiedu Nketia) being completely publicly humiliated if he had taken those findings to court.
He stated unequivocally that when he stepped in the dock during cross-examination at the Supreme Court, he vehemently denied the results because the NDC had no proof to support their claims.
“In fact, even the party’s lawyer, Tsatsu Tsikata refused to defend the NDC because of the lack of concrete evidence, Mr. Asiedu Nketia revealed.
“When we were doing the collation, the system you (Chairman Ofosu Ampofo) brought saying it is robust and strong, when we collated five Regions; we are told it has crashed. This is the truth. So, when we decided to go to court, we agreed to do manual collation. So, we gathered some people to collect the pink sheets and our Chairman sat on the Collation Committee that he will handle the collation. He went for some University people who did some shoddy work. When the time was up for me to stand in the dock, the results that they gave me if I use it to defend the case, I will be disgraced so we couldn’t send those results to the court.
“They then said we should go to lawyer Tsikata. So we carried all the documents and presented them to lawyer Tsikata. These are things we shouldn’t be saying publicly. When we gave them to him and in the next morning, after he had perused them, he replied us saying take back your grasscutter. If these are the things you are sending to the court, go and look for your lawyer because I can’t do this work. This is why when we went to court and they said where are my results, I replied that I didn’t bring any results. I believe you heard that; I don’t know how to lie. I am saying if I become the Chairman, all this nonsense will not happen,” General Mosquito stated in the audio recording.
