Renowned Ghanaian boxer and comedian, Braimah Kamoko, popularly known as Bukom Banku, recently shared fascinating details about his ancestry, revealing that his roots can be traced back to Mali.
In a recent interview, Banku explained that he hails from Mali and migrated to Ghana as a result of decisions made by Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah.
Banku elaborated that he belongs to the third generation of a Malian family that was brought to Ghana by Kwame Nkrumah to assist with sanitation efforts in the country’s urban areas.
He revealed that his grandfather settled in Ghana after being relocated by Kwame Nkrumah, emphasizing that he has no knowledge of his relatives in Mali but is well-acquainted with his maternal lineage.
“I’m originally not a Ghanaian. I’m from a town in Mali. Kwame Nkrumah brought our grandfathers to clean gutters in Ghana, and that is how we ended up here. The Alis originally come from Mali, but Kwame Nkrumah brought them to Ghana to clean Ghanaian gutters, and my grandfather was part of that.
“He gave birth to Amadou (Banku’s father), Amadou gave birth to Braimah, and I gave birth to Tilapia. I’m half Malian and half Ghanaian, but I don’t know my family in Mali. I only know my mother’s family members,” he said.
Bukom Banku was in the news recently when he disclosed that he would prefer working as a security man abroad rather than in Ghana.
Banku told Property FM that relocating abroad enhances one’s chances of improving their economic fortunes.
“When your money is about to finish, you should rather save some and leave this country. If I am made a security guard at Marina Mall, people will come and laugh at me. But if I leave Ghana and work elsewhere, I will be respected when I return,” he said during an interview with Property FM.
He continued, “If I go to London right now, I will not come back. Take me to Canada; I will go and be a security man there, and I won’t come back.”
