Residents of Kumasi and its surrounding areas will face a temporary water shortage starting Monday, March 17, 2025, as Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Ashanti Region shuts down the Barekese Water Treatment Plant.
According to a press release from GWL management, the shutdown is necessary to facilitate the installation of new interconnection pipelines and foot valves at the Suame Roundabout. The process, expected to last three days, is part of ongoing efforts to enhance water supply to the metropolis.
The temporary halt in water distribution will affect the entire Kumasi metropolis, Offinso, and nearby communities. Residents are advised to seek alternative water sources for their daily needs.
“We urge all affected communities to bear with us during this period,” the statement read.
Essential service providers such as hospitals and schools in the impacted areas have also been advised to store sufficient water to sustain them throughout the shutdown.
While acknowledging the inconvenience this may cause, GWL has assured the public that it will work diligently to restore water supply within the projected timeframe.
“This initiative aligns with GWL’s commitment to improving the water supply capacity from the Barekese Water Treatment Plant, ensuring better service delivery and addressing supply challenges in the metropolis,” the statement added.
The management of GWL expressed regret for the temporary disruption but emphasized that the project is aimed at enhancing water distribution services for the public.
