Kumasi: Police Inspector Jailed for Life Over Murder of Girlfriend
The Asokore District Court in the Ashanti Region has sentenced Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, a police officer, to life imprisonment for the murder of his alleged girlfriend, Victoria Dapaah, popularly known as Maa Adwoa.
The tragic incident occurred on April 20, 2023, at Adum in Kumasi, where Twumasi shot Victoria multiple times with his service pistol, leading to her death from hemorrhagic shock. The case shocked the nation and reignited public debate about gender-based violence and police misconduct.

During the trial, Inspector Twumasi denied having an intimate relationship with the deceased and rejected claims that their alleged affair had caused marital problems with his wife, Yaa Afriyie. When asked about reports that his wife had left home on April 19, 2023, he insisted, “It is not true.”
Despite his denials, the court found compelling evidence linking him to the crime. After nearly two years of legal proceedings, the court found Twumasi guilty of murder and imposed a life sentence, citing the seriousness of the offence and the need for justice for the victim and her family.
The ruling brings an end to a case that drew national outrage and widespread condemnation, particularly over the abuse of power and growing cases of violence against women.
The sentencing, according to legal observers, sends a strong message about accountability within law enforcement and the justice system’s resolve to uphold the rule of law—regardless of one’s position or profession.
