“Kumasi people are more humble than those in Accra” – Ramsey Nouah
Nigerian movie star Ramsey Tokunbo Nouah Jr., popularly known as Ramsey Nouah, has stirred conversation with his observations about the contrasting lifestyles he has encountered in Ghana’s two major cities, Accra and Kumasi.
The veteran actor drew parallels between the Ghanaian cities and Nigeria’s Lagos and Abuja, saying his experience has made Accra feel closer to Abuja, while Kumasi reminds him of Lagos.
“Lagos is the hustlers’ place. Abuja is where people are eating and enjoying the big money, and they act like they are the big boys. Lagos is more like the entrepreneurs. It feels like the same thing here. So Accra is like the big boys, but Kumasi is like hustlers, entrepreneurs and all those things,” he said.
Ramsey Nouah said he found people in Kumasi to be less concerned with projecting affluence and more approachable compared with what he has experienced in Accra.
“People are more down-to-earth here than in Accra. That’s what I noticed,” he noted.
He cited a suggestion to take a colleague out for fufu as an example of what he sees as the difference in social habits between the two cities. According to him, such a choice contrasts with the more upscale dining options he associates with Accra.
“You want to take my sister to eat fufu; now in Accra they won’t take her to eat fufu, they’ll take her to an expensive place like La Chaumière,” he pointed out.
The actor’s remarks have generated debate among Ghanaians, with some agreeing with his description of the two cities while others question whether lifestyle and personality can be broadly defined by location.
For Ramsey Nouah, however, his observations reflect the different social atmospheres he has encountered during his time in Ghana, with Kumasi leaving him with a particularly strong impression of humility and everyday hustle.
