The executives and members of the Asafo Market Driver Welfare branch of the GPRTU in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, are urgently appealing to government authorities to repair the Kumasi–Dunkwa–Anyanful–Bogoso–Tarkwa highway.

The union recently staged a peaceful demonstration on portions of the road and submitted petitions to both the Amansie Central Municipal Assembly and the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, as these assemblies oversee the affected stretch.

Speaking on behalf of the union, Mr. Emmanuel Osei Yeboah, the administrative secretary, highlighted the severe hardship the poor road conditions have caused for both drivers and passengers.

He noted that many car owners are now discouraged from purchasing new vehicles for use on this route due to frequent breakdowns and financial losses.

Mr. Akwasi Appiah Agyekum added that nearly all vehicles using this route are in poor condition because of the bad roads. He described driving on the highway during the rainy season as extremely difficult and dangerous.

As a temporary measure, he urged both assemblies to utilize the DRIP machines, left by the previous government, to fix the most problematic sections.

Some drivers also voiced their frustration, stating that the bad roads have led to frequent armed robber attacks, as the poor condition provides cover for criminals. Additionally, they lamented that their vehicle maintenance costs have tripled as a direct result of the deteriorating highway.
