The management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has appealed to Ghanaian musician Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah, popularly known as Mzbel, to provide details that will assist an internal investigation into her allegation that a family member died after reportedly being unable to secure a bed at the country’s premier referral hospital.

The request follows a video shared by Mzbel on social media in which she claimed that her relative lost their life because no bed was available at the hospital when medical care was urgently needed. The emotional account sparked widespread public concern and reignited conversations about pressure on Ghana’s healthcare system, particularly bed shortages at major referral facilities.

In a statement released on July 7, 2026, the hospital said it had immediately begun efforts to establish contact with Mzbel and her relatives to verify exactly what transpired before the patient’s death.

According to the hospital, investigators are seeking clarity on whether the patient had already been transferred to Korle Bu and was refused admission due to the lack of a bed, or whether the patient was still at another health facility and had been instructed to wait until space became available before being referred.

“Since becoming aware of the publication, every effort has been made to establish contact with Mzbel and her family to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident. In particular, the Hospital seeks to determine whether the deceased was referred to KBTH and denied admission upon arrival, or whether the patient had not yet been transferred to the Hospital and was advised to await the availability of a bed,” the statement read.

Management stressed that the hospital remains fully committed to the government’s directive prohibiting the refusal of emergency patients requiring urgent medical attention.

“The Hospital would therefore regard any deliberate refusal to attend to an emergency patient as a serious breach of established policy and would investigate such conduct thoroughly,” the release added.

The hospital further disclosed that it has recently expanded its capacity by acquiring more beds and equipment to reduce congestion while reminding all emergency and clinical units of their responsibility to comply with the national emergency care policy.

Mzbel, who has been vocal on social issues throughout her career, drew significant public attention with her claims, prompting calls for accountability and improved healthcare delivery. Although the hospital has not confirmed the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident, it says establishing the facts remains its immediate priority.
