The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly in the Ashanti region has donated 30 dustbins to the Suntreso government hospital as part of their comprehensive plan to address sanitation issues in the metropolis.
During a formal ceremony, Mayor Samuel Pyne personally presented the dustbins to the hospital.
Addressing the media following the donation, the Mayor emphasized the critical importance of having proper waste management systems in place at the hospital.
“The consequences of inadequate waste disposal within a healthcare facility are not only unsightly but also pose serious health risks. Recognizing this, the Assembly has taken the initiative to provide hospitals with dustbins to ensure cleanliness and hygiene.”
“In fact, we have already donated 50 dustbins to the renowned Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. Our efforts extend beyond healthcare institutions, as we are also focusing on educational establishments within the jurisdiction of the KMA. With over 1,000 trash cans at our disposal, we are committed to distributing them effectively.”
The Mayor, however, revealed that eight individuals have been prosecuted this year for violating sanitation regulations.
Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Thomas Agyarko-Poku, the Medical Superintendent of the Suntreso Government Hospital, acknowledged the timely intervention of the KMA.
“We are immensely grateful to receive these dustbins from the Assembly. They will greatly assist us in maintaining cleanliness, and we will promptly position them at various strategic locations within the hospital premises. We kindly request that all patients utilize these bins when visiting our facility.” Dr. Agyarko-Poku said.
