The Keta Divisional Police Command in the Volta Region has arrested three suspects for allegedly transporting hard drugs, known as ‘Taramaking,’ from Togo to Accra through land borders.

The suspects, whose names have been withheld, were apprehended at a police checkpoint on the Accra-Aflao road on February 24 at about 3:30 pm.

They were traveling on an STC bus with registration number GG 1736-19, which was carrying the contraband.

Head of the Volta Region Office of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Gordon Akurugu, confirmed the arrest, stating that the FDA received intelligence on the police interception and conducted a follow-up investigation.

“Our findings confirmed the seizure of 120 milligrams of Taramaking, which exceeds the normal registration threshold. Moreover, it is not a registered product with the FDA, and an executive instrument prohibits the sale of tramadol in the country,” he explained.

He noted that the market value of the seized drugs is estimated at GH¢1.4 million. Had the drugs not been intercepted, they could have ended up in circulation, leading to widespread abuse and posing a significant risk to public health.

Mr. Akurugu emphasized that transporting drugs or medicines through inland borders is illegal, as only Kotoka International Airport and Tema Port are authorized entry points.

He commended the police for their vigilance and assured that border monitoring efforts at Akanu, Kpoglu, and Aflao remain active to curb smuggling.

“Our investigation revealed that the seized drugs (Taramaking tablets) may have originated from Togo or another country. The FDA is issuing a strong warning to potential smugglers to desist from such illicit activities, and authorities are working to unravel the entire smuggling network. The public is encouraged to report any information that could aid in the investigation,” he added.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Seth Adu-Boahen, Keta Divisional Commander, confirmed the arrest and disclosed that another suspect, who allegedly placed the drugs on the STC bus en route to Accra, has also been apprehended.

He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help combat drug smuggling.
