The Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Samuel Pyne has disclosed that about 80% of work has been done on Phase 2 of the Kumasi Kejetia Central Market.
The Kumasi Central Market Traders and Second Hand Clothes Union have threatened a five-day demonstration concerning the abandoned project.
In a statement released on Monday, April 8, 2024, the Union expressed their total disappointment in the government following the abandonment of the Kejetia Phase 2 market project.
KMA Boss in an interview on Oyerepa Breakfast Show with Nana Yaw Mensah Joel explained that the government has spent close to £ 300 million which is from the UK and is committed to completing the project for traders despite all the financial constraints.
“As we speak about 80% of works have been done on phase 2 of the project and we can all see after the structures were put up and other major works and this means that the project is nearing completion” he said.
Additionally, the Contractor is working on about four monumental projects in the region which were all stalled due to financial constraints and a loan facility from IMF.
“It is not as if the government is doing nothing about the project… we have not neglected it, especially with the Kejetia Market phase 2 including the other projects awarded to contract”, he noted.
He revealed that the project is not funded by KMA so the apportioning of blame to the assembly would have been a different case.
Mr Sam Pyne explained that the government is committed to completing this project for traders in the Ashanti region and is doing everything possible to make that happen.
He disclosed that the project could not be completed before the elections of 2024 because of the few months left to the elections but is sure it could be ready early next year.
