Keche Joshua fumes over GH¢6,000 domestic flight fares
Ghanaian musician Joshua Kojo Ampah, popularly known as Keche Joshua, has criticised the soaring cost of domestic air travel, questioning why flying between major cities in Ghana can cost more than international trips.
The Keche music group member said passengers travelling from Accra to destinations such as Kumasi and Takoradi can spend between GH¢5,000 and GH¢6,000 on a return ticket, describing the fares as excessive.
“Currently, domestic flights in this country, when you travel to Kumasi or Takoradi, round trip, you pay about GH¢5,000 to GH¢6,000. Meanwhile, how much do EgyptAir and Emirates flights to Dubai cost?” he questioned.
Keche Joshua linked the high demand for domestic flights partly to the deteriorating condition of major highways, particularly the Accra-Kumasi and Accra-Takoradi routes.
He urged the Minister for Roads and Highways to accelerate road rehabilitation, arguing that motorists face serious risks when using some of the country’s major highways.
“If you travel by road, the Kumasi and Takoradi routes are in poor condition. On the way to Kumasi, you can encounter 15 to 20 accidents along that stretch. The Minister of Roads and Highways should fix the roads for us because we are tired,” he said.
The musician further accused domestic airlines of charging steep fares amid the challenges confronting road users. He also criticised the quality of meals served on some domestic flights, arguing that passengers should either receive better service or pay less.
“After paying the high price, they won’t serve you rice or yam on the flight. Even the chips they will serve you taste like they’ve been there for six days, and they’re very hard. If they won’t serve us good food on the flight, they should reduce the prices,” he added.
His comments have reignited concerns over the affordability of domestic air travel and the wider impact of Ghana’s road infrastructure challenges on transportation costs.
