Alan John Kojo Kyerematen, the Founder and Leader of the Movement for Change, has denounced Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Flagbearer of the NPP (New Patriotic Party), accusing him of diminishing the significance and power that comes with being Vice President to further his own ambition in seeking presidency.
He stated that Dr. Bawumia’s aspiration to become president cannot justify a decrease in the executive authority of the position.
During an interview with Kwesi Parker Wilson, host of Oyerepa Breakfast Time on February 13, 2024, he argued that the vice president should not present themselves as a mere assistant without any authority or duties in managing the nation.
“You should not, as a vice president who is seeking power, debase the executive authority of the vice president,” he said.
On February 7, 2024, during a lecture, the vice president employed a driver-mate analogy to depict his responsibilities as second in command.
He emphasized that even though he is currently a driver’s assistant, “If I am fortunate enough to become president through divine intervention, I will hold the constitutionally authorized power and assume control over my agenda and goals from the driver’s seat.”
Alan Kyerematen expressed disappointment at Dr Bawumia’s statement, given that he has held office for eight years and played a significant role in important decisions and policies.
“It is a bit disappointing that a vice president describes himself as a driver’s mate. He could have used the term co-pilot because the presidency is one ticket. So, you cannot strictly, strictly speaking, divorce yourself from the president.
“As vice president, he had the opportunity to input at the highest level and he is aware of the many things that have gone on. He takes credit for most of these things. After taking credit you later come and tell us that you are just a driver’ mate. For me, it is just a conflicting signal,” he stated.
