“Is sponsoring my ex-wife’s US trip a big deal?” – Kwaku Manu
Kumawood actor and filmmaker Kwaku Manu has hit back at critics questioning why he sponsored his former wife’s trip to the United States, saying the gesture was simply part of his effort to give his family memorable experiences.
The actor, whose marriage to his former wife has since ended in divorce, said people have placed unnecessary importance on a trip he considered ordinary.
According to Kwaku Manu, he paid for the trip in 2017 as a birthday surprise for his ex-wife after he had long admired families who travelled abroad for holidays.
“Only poor people will talk about such a thing. If you sponsor someone’s trip abroad, it isn’t a big deal, but it is expensive for those of us who don’t have money. It is expensive for people who use their last money to sponsor their loved one’s trip abroad.
“I only took my wife and children abroad because it was nice. Anytime I hear or see families who have travelled abroad, I also want to do the same. After returning from Europe, it was getting close to her birthday, so I decided to surprise her. That was when I took her and my children to the United States because there was an opportunity,” he said.
Kwaku Manu, born Kwaku Manu Asare, also sought to downplay suggestions that taking his former wife abroad was an extraordinary favour, revealing that he had similarly financed overseas trips for his younger brother and a friend.
“I even sponsored my brother and his friend’s trip abroad, so what is the big deal about this? I am sure some people have not had intimacy abroad before,” he added.
His comments come amid renewed public discussion about his past marriage and the circumstances surrounding his ex-wife’s relocation to the United States. Kwaku Manu maintains that his decision to sponsor the trip should not be interpreted as something he expects praise for, insisting it was simply something he could afford and wanted to do at the time.
