“Investigation won’t bring my sister back” — Mzbel fires back at Korle Bu

Ghanaian singer and entrepreneur Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah, popularly known as Mzbel, has responded to the statement issued by Korle Bu Teaching Hospital regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of her sister, Laila.

The musician recently disclosed on social media that her sister died after allegedly failing to receive a hospital bed at the country’s largest referral facility during a medical emergency. Her account generated widespread public debate, with many Ghanaians expressing concern about recurring challenges within the country’s healthcare system, particularly overcrowding and the shortage of hospital beds at major medical centres.

Following the public outcry, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital announced on July 7, 2026, that it had begun efforts to contact Mzbel and members of her family to establish the facts surrounding the incident. The hospital explained that it was seeking accurate information to determine exactly what happened before the patient’s death.

Reacting to the hospital’s statement, Mzbel said she welcomes every effort to establish the facts but stressed that no investigation can undo the tragedy her family has endured.

“My appeal is not for special treatment for my family. My appeal is for meaningful change. Every Ghanaian deserves timely, dignified, and compassionate healthcare,” she stated.

She further indicated that while an investigation may provide answers, it cannot erase the pain of losing her sister or restore the lives that have been permanently affected by the tragedy, including her sister’s children and loved ones.

The controversy began after Mzbel emotionally recounted her family’s experience, alleging that the absence of an available hospital bed contributed to her sister’s death. The claims quickly attracted national attention and renewed calls for improvements in emergency healthcare delivery and hospital infrastructure across Ghana.

As public interest in the matter continues, many Ghanaians are awaiting the outcome of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s investigation, while Mzbel insists that the focus should extend beyond her family’s experience to addressing systemic challenges that could help prevent similar incidents in the future.
