The recent decline in development and sanitation in Greater Kumasi City has brought attention to the urgent need for Assembly members to enhance their efforts in order to improve the city’s progress.
Once known as the Garden City of Ghana, Kumasi has experienced a significant decline in basic infrastructure development, resulting in congestion and poor sanitation. In contrast, the capital city of Ghana, Greater Accra, has witnessed substantial infrastructural growth, surpassing Kumasi as the second-largest city in the country.
During an interview on the Oyerepa Breakfast Show hosted by Asante Soaba, former NADMO Director, Kwabena Senkyire shed light on the reasons behind Kumasi’s stagnant development. He attributed it to the incompetence and immaturity of the leaders in the Greater Kumasi City, which has hindered progress.
Kwabena Senkyire disclosed that, in the past, leaders and assembly members from Accra used to visit Kumasi to learn from its well-planned and managed infrastructure. However, the situation has changed, and now the assembly members in Greater Accra are diligently working with prudence, leading to the rapid growth of the city.
“The assembly members in Accra exhibit a higher level of maturity compared to their counterparts in Kumasi, which has contributed to their rapid development. In the past, assembly members from Accra used to visit Kumasi to learn about the development initiatives implemented here. However, the tables have turned, and the current trend showcases a reversal of roles. Unfortunately, those responsible for planning the development of Kumasi City seem to lack a comprehensive understanding of their tasks, as they lack the necessary knowledge required for effective city development.” He further emphasized.
Kwabena Senkyire subsequently said it is crucial for the Assembly members in the Greater Kumasi City to recognize the importance of their role in uplifting the city’s development. By addressing the issues of inadequate infrastructure and poor sanitation, they can restore Kumasi to its former glory as the Garden City of Ghana.
“I’ll urge assembly members and Unit committee members to put the country, especially Kumasi at heart for the city’s proper development.”He entreated.
