Mr Alan John Kyerematen, former Minister of Trade and Industry and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential candidate, claims he is the only contender who can win hugely in the Ashanti Region to ensure victory for the NPP in the 2024 polls.
“In NPP, you need a candidate who has the capacity to do two things; to consolidate your base and reduce the strength of your opponent. For me, I believe that I am the candidate who can pull 80% of the total votes in the Ashanti Region, compete with the NDC in the Volta Region and weaken their strength in the other region.” Mr Alan John Kyerematen stated on Angel FM Kumasi.
According to Mr Alan Kyerematen, his assertion is not related to division or tribalism but is simply a fact that his party members must be aware of.
“This is not about division but we all know that NPP has its root in Asante and excuse me to say that talking about this is not a bad thing to do. Everybody knows that our base is the Ashanti Region.” He emphasized.
He did, however, accept that the next general election will be difficult for the NPP, despite his belief that President Akufo-Addo has done an outstanding job.
“So for a difficult election which I perceive is going to occur in 2024, you need a candidate who can win at least 80% vote in the Ashanti Region and guarantee us the victory”. Mr Alan Kwadwo told Kwame Tanko in his interview.
He also stated that people in the Volta Region, which is regarded as the NDC’s stronghold, love him so much that he can nullify the scenario and bring the NPP to power.
Mr Alan Kyerematen is competing for the position of flagbearer with about five other members of the ruling NPP, including Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, former Agriculture Minister Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong.
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is expected to win the primaries, has yet to formally declare his willingness.
