Flagbearer hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has dismissed claims that “the street” is pushing for a particular candidate in the party’s upcoming flagbearership race, calling such assertions mere propaganda.
Speaking on Pure FM, Agyepong emphasised that it is the party member, not the general public, who has the authority to choose the NPP’s next flagbearer.
He stressed that once the party has made its decision, it is then the candidate and the party that will present themselves and their message to Ghanaians.
“They say mechanics and market women are asking for a particular candidate, but that is not how it works. The party belongs to us, and it is the party that will select its candidate. After that, the party will market the candidate’s strengths to the people,” he explained.
Agyepong further questioned the notion that public opinion should dictate the party’s choice.
“How do you know who Ghanaians are clamouring for? We are a political party, and leadership requires contestation. The five of us will compete, and once the party selects a candidate, we will present him to the people and highlight his strengths. Claims that the street wants one candidate undermine the very idea of leadership. If popularity alone were enough, then we might as well choose Shatta Wale because he is popular and has numbers,” he added.
He reiterated that the NPP’s decision-making process is internal, and the ultimate choice rests with party members, not external pressure or public clamour.
