If I had my way, funds for 24 hour economy market would have been used to completed the hospital – Bosomtwe DCE

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bosomtwe, Hon. Eng. Abdullah Hamidu, has suggested that he would have prioritised the completion of the stalled Sewua Regional Hospital project over other infrastructure projects if he had control over funding allocations.

Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time with Kwesi Parker-Wilson, the DCE attributed the delay in completing the hospital to inadequate funding, stressing that the project falls under the Ministry of Health and is therefore outside the direct control of the district assembly.

“If the ministry is doing its project, as a chief executive I do not have the power to change priorities. If I were in charge of the funds and you asked me which one to prioritise, it would probably be health. Every ministry has its own projects. The 24-hour market is under the Ministry of Local Government, while Sewua Hospital is under the Ministry of Health,” he said.

His comments come amid growing public concern over the delayed completion of the Sewua Regional Hospital, a major healthcare facility expected to serve the Ashanti Region and help ease pressure on health institutions in Kumasi.

Hon. Hamidu expressed optimism that the contractor could complete the project by early next year if the required funds are released promptly.

“I am sure if the contractor is given funds soon, he might finish it early next year. We are doing our best to complete the regional hospital so that we can reduce the pressure on Komfo Anokye,” he stated.

The need for additional healthcare infrastructure in the region has become more urgent following the recent suspension of new admissions at the Accident and Emergency Centre of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. The hospital announced the temporary measure due to ongoing renovation works and operational challenges, prompting concerns about healthcare access for emergency patients across the Ashanti Region and beyond.

The Sewua Regional Hospital, located in the Bosomtwe District, was initiated as a 500-bed facility aimed at expanding specialist healthcare services and serving as a referral centre for the region. Once completed and operational, the hospital is expected to significantly reduce patient congestion at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and improve healthcare delivery in the Ashanti Region.
