The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has called on the Chief of Staff, Dr. Julius Debrah, to urgently convene and lead a high-level government delegation to tackle worsening congestion at Ghana’s ports.

Founder and Executive Secretary of IEAG, Samson Asaki Awingobit, made the call at a press conference in Accra, warning that Ghana risks losing its import trade to neighboring countries if immediate action is not taken.

Mr. Awingobit recommended that the Chief of Staff lead a special delegation comprising the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Trade, and the Minister of Transport, together with relevant port regulatory agencies, to undertake comprehensive stakeholder engagement and establish an immediate action plan to decongest the ports.

According to him, the current governance structure at the port is contributing to the challenges.

“We are calling on the Chief of Staff to take a keen interest and lead these three ministries and we the stakeholders to find a lasting solution. Maybe we can have a one-day national dialogue to deal with the situation,” he said.

He warned that importers are currently struggling and if a clear timeline is not given on who should do what, the ports will face a complete crash in December.

“We are struggling. If we don’t do this right now and give a timeline as to who should do what, trust me, there will be a crash in December this year at the port,” he stressed.
