Ibrahim Mahama Rejects Reports of VALCO Acquisition, Threatens Lawsuit

Businessman Ibrahim Mahama has dismissed reports suggesting he intends to acquire the Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO), describing the claims as false and malicious.

The denial comes after workers of VALCO and the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU) staged a protest in Tema over alleged plans to sell the state-owned aluminium company.

In a statement issued by his Special Aide, Rafik Mahama, the businessman categorically denied having any interest in purchasing VALCO or submitting an offer to acquire the company.

“Mr Ibrahim Mahama has no such interest and has not made any such offer to acquire VALCO,” the statement said.

The statement described the allegations as part of a series of attempts to tarnish Mr Mahama’s reputation and unnecessarily drag his name into public controversy.

It maintained that all of Mr Mahama’s business ventures were lawfully established or acquired and continue to operate in full compliance with Ghana’s legal and regulatory framework.

According to the statement, the continued success of his businesses through seven successive election cycles reflects their strong corporate governance, sound management and adherence to the law.

“The track record of the integrity of the businesses that Mr Mahama has interest in prove that his businesses are one of the best run operations across the African continent,” the statement added.

The statement further reaffirmed Mr Mahama’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s economic growth through legitimate investments both locally and internationally.

It also disclosed that he has instructed his legal team to commence legal proceedings against those responsible for publishing and circulating the allegations.

Meanwhile, workers of VALCO and the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union have reiterated their opposition to any attempt to privatise or dispose of the state-owned aluminium company, arguing that such a move could jeopardise jobs and undermine Ghana’s industrialisation agenda.
